Java and Database Developer

Location: Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, United States; hybrid setup with up to two days of telework per week after initial training

What you will do

• Develop, debug, maintain, and optimize Java applications, Spring Boot services, REST APIs, Spring Batch processes, and database-connected components.
• Develop and maintain complex SQL queries, stored procedures, triggers, views, joins, scripts, and database business logic.
• Support enterprise integrations involving REST APIs, IBM MQ or comparable messaging platforms, secure file transfers, notifications, scheduled jobs, and message-based workflows.
• Investigate production incidents, application defects, data discrepancies, failed integrations, performance issues, and distributed application problems, including participation in a weekly on-call rotation.
• Maintain and enhance legacy Java and database applications through controlled fixes, refactoring, query tuning, data reconciliation, and data quality validation.
• Test, review, document, and validate changes while collaborating with business analysts, testers, database administrators, developers, and operations teams.

Requirements

• At least two years of professional application development and support experience, preferably three to five years, with significant hands-on Java and relational database development experience.
• Experience with Java applications using Spring Boot, REST APIs, Spring Batch, JDBC/JPA, application configuration, and structured application logging; experience with Java 17 or newer and Java 21.
• Significant experience developing, debugging, and maintaining SQL queries, complex stored procedures, triggers, views, joins, scripts, and database business logic.
• Working knowledge of SAP ASE/Sybase or a comparable relational database platform, including data modeling, data reconciliation, data quality, query tuning, connection pooling, multiple data source configurations, and production database troubleshooting.
• Experience supporting integrations with REST APIs, IBM MQ or comparable enterprise messaging platforms, scheduled jobs, message-based workflows, secure file transfers, FTP/SFTP, email notifications, and file publishing.
• Ability to troubleshoot production issues, diagnose application and data problems, resolve defects, and implement accurate fixes with minimal oversight.
• Working knowledge of Maven, unit testing, mocking frameworks, code reviews, software validation, integration testing, and distributed application concepts including service dependencies, retries, timeouts, failover, idempotency, and recovery.
• Experience with Docker containerization; familiarity with Kubernetes or OpenShift, Git, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or comparable CI/CD tools.
• Strong communication, problem-solving, collaboration, ownership, and technical documentation skills, plus ability to participate in a weekly on-call rotation and support production operations.

Nice to have

• Experience with SAP ASE/Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server T-SQL, Oracle PL/SQL, or another comparable procedural SQL environment.
• Familiarity with monitoring, observability, and distributed tracing tools such as Splunk, ELK Stack, Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry.
• Knowledge of OAuth2/OIDC, JWT, mutual TLS, certificates, and secrets management.
• Experience with Testcontainers, WireMock, contract testing, Selenium, or Cypress.
• Familiarity with Linux/Unix shell scripting, PowerShell, load testing, or capacity planning.
• Exposure to React, Angular, Vue, TypeScript, HTML, or CSS for end-to-end troubleshooting.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, using pull request workflows, conducting peer reviews, managing issues, and maintaining technical documentation.
