Backend Engineer, Source Code: Repository Services (Ruby)

Location: Remote, United Kingdom

Salary: $115,200–$194,400 USD base salary annually; the published range applies to residents of the United States only and excludes bonuses, equity, and benefits.

What you will do

• Develop secure, tested, and performant Ruby and GraphQL features for repository access and verification.
• Design and maintain backend services, APIs, data models, and business logic controlling how code reaches repositories, who may change it, and how changes are verified.
• Build on Gitaly primitives and collaborate with the Gitaly, Code Review, product, design, testing, security, research, and technical writing teams.
• Triage bugs and support requests, address legacy constraints, and deliver reliable solutions for hirify.global.com, self-managed instances, and hirify.global Dedicated.
• Improve production reliability through performance and SQL tuning, caching, rate limiting, monitoring, observability, resiliency, incident troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and Tier 2 on-call participation.
• Use and critically review AI coding agents, contribute to code reviews and technical documentation, and share knowledge asynchronously and synchronously.

Requirements

• Professional experience building backend web applications, services, or APIs using Ruby and GraphQL.
• Understanding of relational databases, SQL, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices.
• Experience contributing to user-facing workflows and maintaining their underlying systems.
• Experience writing backend unit and integration tests; familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review.
• Experience using AI coding agents and reviewing their output, or interest in developing these skills in a complex monorepo.
• Clear written and spoken English communication skills are required for remote, asynchronous collaboration.
• Ability to manage priorities, work through ambiguity, take ownership, and seek guidance when needed.
