Staff Engineer, Automation (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States; U.S. work authorization required. Visa sponsorship is not provided.

Base compensation: $190,000–$220,000 per year.

What you will do

• Build and expand customer-facing workflow automation for operational and clinical workflows.
• Develop triggers and actions across scheduling, charting, billing, messaging, and patient engagement.
• Engineer reliable, scalable automation infrastructure with retries, idempotency, error handling, failure visibility, and customer-facing feedback.
• Build an intuitive Automation builder for configuring and managing workflows without technical expertise.
• Apply AI, LLM APIs, and intelligent workflow orchestration to create adaptive automation capabilities.
• Own technical delivery from architecture and development through deployment, monitoring, optimization, and reusable engineering standards; collaborate with Engineering, Product, Security, and Operations.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including significant hands-on experience designing and implementing production-grade automation solutions.
• Experience building and operating production event-driven or workflow systems, including on-call responsibility.
• Comfort working in Rails or a similar backend framework.
• Experience with webhooks, queues, duplicate events, rate limits, and partial failures.
• Ability to explain technical tradeoffs to non-engineers in writing or verbally.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS, and modern CI/CD tooling.
• Familiarity with workflow orchestration, job scheduling, event-driven architectures, and automation frameworks.
• Experience with relational databases such as PostgreSQL and background processing systems such as Redis or Sidekiq.
• Ability to independently identify opportunities, design technical solutions, and deliver measurable improvements.
• Strong troubleshooting skills and understanding of observability, system reliability, production operations, and cross-functional collaboration.

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare technology, EHR platforms, or other highly regulated environments.
• Familiarity with HIPAA, healthcare data privacy, and secure automation practices.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, and GraphQL.
• Experience with AI-powered development tools, LLM APIs, or agentic workflow automation tools.
• Experience automating healthcare workflows involving clinical operations, billing, claims processing, or patient engagement.
