Senior Software Engineer, Backoffice Platform (AI)

Location: Remote-first across the UK and Europe; attendance is expected at in-person company meetings twice a year in February and August. The London office is available when desired.

What you will do

• Own and operate the back office platform managing customer packages, entitlements, limits, billing, and internal administration tools.
• Design and deliver solutions to ambiguous business problems, deciding when to extend, rework, or replace existing systems.
• Build administration workflows that let Finance, Customer Success, and Support understand customer purchases, billing, and limits and make reliable changes.
• Work directly with Finance, Customer Success, Support, Engineering, the Head of Infrastructure, and Developer Experience teams.
• Use LLMs and AI tools for planning, prototyping, coding, and documentation while retaining ownership of correctness and architecture.
• Make entitlement and invoice decisions explainable, and define testing and production-readiness standards for systems where errors can have financial consequences.

Requirements

• Experience working in large, established codebases and judgement about whether to extend, rework, or replace systems; Ruby on Rails experience is helpful, but no single language is required.
• Experience shaping architecture within an inherited system, including making data ownership and system-boundary decisions.
• Ability to self-start, work through ambiguity, make decisions independently, and challenge requirements or propose process changes instead of automatically writing code.
• An AI-first mindset, with practical understanding of where LLMs and AI tools can improve productivity and where rigorous human judgement is required.
• Experience making systems observable and testable, including instrumentation, answering unanticipated operational questions, and defining a test strategy for systems with incomplete coverage.

Nice to have

• Experience with usage-based billing systems, including platforms such as Orb, Metronome, or Chargebee.
• Background in platform or internal tooling teams rather than product teams.
• Experience being accountable for an entire system, especially one subject to financial or compliance audit.
