Senior Software Engineer – Payments

Location: Fully remote, but must be based in Manchester, United Kingdom; quarterly team gatherings in global offices.

Salary: £85,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, build, and operate payment-domain services, including gateway integrations and authorisation, capture, refund, payout, and reconciliation flows.
• Implement marketplace capabilities such as KYC onboarding, merchant configuration, settlement instructions, deductions, and invoicing alignment.
• Build idempotency, ledgers, events, audit trails, and other flow-of-funds primitives that support finance and compliance.
• Integrate PSP and partner tooling and implement dispute, chargeback, and fraud-handling workflows.
• Partner with Product, Legal/Compliance, Finance, Support, and Operations on safe production behaviour, runbooks, and escalations.
• Improve testing, safe rollouts, observability, incident response, design reviews, documentation, and engineering standards while mentoring engineers.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience with distributed systems, microservices, asynchronous processing, resilient APIs, and eventual consistency.
• Production experience with payment flows including authorisation, capture, refunds, webhooks, and reconciliation.
• Experience with money-correctness patterns including idempotency keys, double-entry thinking, and auditability.
• Security mindset covering PCI compliance, PII protection, secrets management, least privilege, and secure coding.
• Comfort working in an Azure-first environment with APIs, queues/eventing, monitoring, CI/CD, and automated testing.
• Clear, confident communication with non-technical stakeholders during incidents, financial breaks, and compliance requests.

Nice to have

• Experience with sub-merchant, marketplace, or Payfac-like operating models, including KYC, underwriting, settlements, and fee deductions.
• Familiarity with dispute tooling, card scheme rules, 3DS/risk rules, or fraud platforms.
