Senior Data Engineer (AI/LLM)

Location: CDR (Amsterdam - Cedar), Netherlands; hybrid working.

What you will do

• Frame business problems and clarify requirements with Wholesale Banking stakeholders.
• Explore data, assess availability and technical feasibility, and evaluate expected business impact.
• Develop rapid proof of concepts and prototypes for AI opportunities, including LLM-related use cases.
• Translate findings into clear recommendations and structured handover packages for building teams.
• Collaborate with engineers, architects, analysts, data scientists, UX specialists, and product owners in a fast-paced discovery environment.
• Apply iterative delivery and pragmatic trade-offs while aligning with banking standards for risk, privacy, security, and model governance.

Requirements

• Strong Python programming proficiency.
• Data engineering experience building scalable data pipelines and optimizing data processing, including Spark, Airflow, partitioning, incremental loads, performance tuning, medallion architecture, and data quality frameworks such as GE and Pydantic.
• Demonstrated AI integration expertise, including LLMs such as Gemini and Claude, retrieval-augmented generation patterns, prompt design and evaluation, and vector databases.
• Ability to quickly explore data and assess availability, quality, constraints, technical feasibility, and expected business impact.
• Experience building rapid prototypes and proof of concepts and translating outcomes into recommendations and next steps.
• Experience designing and deploying cloud solutions, including CI/CD and containerization such as Docker.
• Experience with production-minded development environments, including staging, testing, monitoring, observability, and reliability.
• Ability to structure ambiguous problems, make sound decisions with limited information, adapt to changing priorities, and communicate complex ideas clearly.

Nice to have

• Experience with ML model training, validation, and experiment tracking.
• GCP expertise; Kubernetes or container platforms such as OpenShift.
• Familiarity with discovery processes or design sprints, storytelling, and visualization.
• Experience building and maintaining high-load APIs, OpenAPI integration or governance, APIs, microservices, REST, asynchronous programming, and event-driven architectures.
• Comfort working in regulated environments.
• Familiarity with agentic frameworks such as ADK, LangChain, LangGraph, or CrewAI and multi-agent design patterns.
• Basic Java or Kotlin knowledge for connectivity to ING internal systems.
• Open-source contributions.
