Staff Software Engineer (Java)

Location: Remote within the United States; up to 10% travel as needed. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without current or future employer sponsorship. Individuals residing in Delaware, Hawaii, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Vermont, Puerto Rico, and other US territories are not currently eligible.

Salary: $150,000–$165,000 annually, plus an eligible bonus target.

What you will do

• Lead the technical design and development of backend features and third-party integrations for Dentrix Ascend from initial design through production delivery.
• Build resilient, scalable systems that handle incomplete or poor-quality external data, including fallbacks and vendor integrations.
• Contribute to architecture, performance, reliability, microservices, REST APIs, clean architecture, SOLID principles, refactoring, design patterns, and test-driven development.
• Troubleshoot complex technical issues, including database and SQL query performance; drive incident response and postmortems.
• Serve as a quality gate, contribute to test automation, use AI-assisted development tools, and deploy daily to CI/CD tiers in partnership with DevOps/SRE.
• Collaborate with Product Management, Design, Data/Analytics, Security, and DevOps/SRE; participate in Scrum ceremonies, review code, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building backend software with Java and Spring Boot, including significant hands-on experience with enterprise-level applications.
• Ability to think deeply about large-scale problems, step back before developing solutions, work with ambiguity, and take ownership through follow-up.
• Database engineering skills, including writing SQL queries and troubleshooting and debugging data issues.
• Comfort with daily and zero-downtime deployments.
• Experience creating and working with microservices and modern architectural patterns.
• Experience with large language models or similar AI tools for generating, interpreting, and improving code.
• Understanding of domain-driven design and expert-level experience with unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
• Experience working in an agile environment with Scrum or Kanban, plus excellent communication and close collaboration with Product.
• Ability to explain technical decisions and tradeoffs and effectively estimate engineering work within 6–12-month timelines.

Nice to have

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Experience leading technical design for cross-team projects and mentoring junior engineers.
• Domain knowledge in insurance and claims.
• Experience with systems infrastructure alerting and dashboards.
• Full-stack experience.
• Experience with Java 17, Spring Boot, Groovy, Postgres, SQL Server, AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab, Dynatrace, React, Vue, or Backbone.
