Engineer Lead (Java)

Location: Remote within the United States; must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship and able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Salary: $130,000–$160,000 annually.

What you will do

• Design, write, test, and ship production Java 17+ and Spring Boot code in two-week sprints.
• Own complex technical work across API design, service decomposition, data access, and enterprise integrations.
• Improve engineering quality through code review, pairing, refactoring, and automated test coverage.
• Mentor engineers and serve as a technical point of contact for customer architects and technical stakeholders.
• Communicate technical risks, tradeoffs, dependencies, architecture decisions, and implementation choices to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Manage a small group of engineers, including feedback, performance and career development, timecard and PTO administration, interviews, and technical assessments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and 9+ years of relevant software engineering experience; equivalent professional experience may substitute for education.
• Currently hands-on, with production code shipped within the last 12 months and a commitment to daily coding.
• 8+ years of Java development, including current Java 17+ experience, and 5+ years with Spring and Spring Boot.
• 5+ years designing REST APIs and web services in microservices architectures, plus experience with Oracle or comparable relational databases, Hibernate/JPA, and SQL performance troubleshooting.
• Experience with the full software development lifecycle, engineering quality practices, technical mentoring, and communicating decisions to technical and nontechnical audiences.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship and must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust security clearance.

Nice to have

• Experience with Kafka, Redis, Spring WebFlux, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience modernizing legacy monoliths, supporting federal government programs, or working in government contracting.
• Experience with cross-functional Engineering, Product, Design, and Program Management teams.
• Prior people management experience while remaining hands-on.
• An active, VA-adjudicated Public Trust clearance.
