What you will do
Advise research and data teams on training-data provenance, permissible use, copyright, licensing, privacy, and contractual restrictions.
Structure and negotiate data licensing, material transfer, consortium, and research collaboration agreements, including allocation of rights in data, models, and derived outputs.
Advise on model, agent, tool, dataset, code, and platform releases; coordinate launch readiness, system cards, capability evaluations, publication review, and open-source licensing.
Partner with AI safety and security teams on evaluations, red-teaming, misuse prevention, dual-use and biosecurity controls, access restrictions, and disclosure.
Track AI, health-data, human-subject, biospecimen, export-control, and data-localization requirements; support cloud, datacenter, and cross-border data arrangements.
Build scalable legal frameworks, templates, playbooks, and self-service guidance for cross-functional teams.
Requirements
J.D. and membership in at least one U.S. state bar in good standing.
7–12 years of legal experience, including substantial in-house experience at a technology, AI, or life sciences company and ideally both research-facing and product- or customer-facing counseling.
Depth in at least two of copyright and IP, data licensing and provenance, privacy and data protection, AI regulation, model launch and deployment counseling, or research and collaboration transactions.
Technical fluency in model training, evaluation, deployment, and research protocols, with the ability to identify legal issues in technical designs.
Sound judgment under uncertainty and the ability to provide clear, practical advice where legal precedent is unsettled.
Strong ownership, cross-functional relationship-building, written communication, and policy or framework drafting skills.
Comfort working outside established expertise and operating at startup speed without losing rigor.
Nice to have
STEM background or advanced degree in biology, chemistry, materials, or computer science.
Experience with AI research teams, training data, model development or release, enterprise/API deployment, agentic features, model documentation, system cards, or capability evaluations.
Experience with AI-generated inventions, inventorship, patent strategy, dual-use, biosecurity, export controls, CFIUS, academic collaborations, consortium agreements, or federally funded research.
Academic or publishing experience, open-source and data licensing expertise, regulator or standards-body engagement, or legal infrastructure built from scratch.
Experience using AI and data-driven tools to transform legal practice.
