First Legal Hire (AI)

Location: San Francisco office; fully in person

Base salary: $250K–$350K annually, plus equity

What you will do

• Build and lead the legal function as the first legal hire, working directly with founders and across engineering, product, and go-to-market.
• Lead customer and partner negotiations covering enterprise agreements, API distribution and reseller arrangements, data processing agreements, and vendor contracts.
• Advise technical teams on product design, data use, retention, international processing, security commitments, and privacy requirements.
• Monitor AI laws, regulatory developments, and industry practices, and develop positions and recommendations for the business.
• Establish contract intake, approval, signing, management, and self-service processes, using automation and AI where appropriate.
• Own company-wide legal support, including employment, corporate, governance, intellectual property, outside counsel, resources, and business partnership.

Requirements

• At least 10–15 years of relevant legal experience, including meaningful in-house experience at a growing technology company.
• Strong legal training, ideally including experience at a leading law firm, with a track record of applying it effectively inside a business.
• Substantial commercial contracting experience and the ability to independently advise on product and privacy matters while recognizing the limits of your expertise.
• Experience scaling legal operations and building processes appropriate to a company’s stage.
• Curiosity about AI and willingness to learn how the technology works, how customers use it, and where legal questions arise.
• Ability to make practical decisions under uncertainty, distinguish material risks from manageable ones, and consider operational and commercial solutions alongside contractual protections.
• Hands-on approach, quick responsiveness, and reliable follow-through in a fast-moving environment.
• Clear communication and ability to build productive relationships with technical teams, customers, executives, investors, and outside counsel.
• Ability to prioritize limited resources and explain what to build, buy, delegate, or defer.
• Admission to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction and eligibility to practice as in-house counsel in California.
