Safety Threat Investigator (Safety Investigations): Managing small- to medium-scope safety investigations involving child exploitation, violent extremism, fraud, compromised accounts, and coordinated abuse with an accent on evidence discipline, account linkage, and defensible documentation. Focus on analyzing and corroborating evidence, recognizing attribution and network risks, escalating complex cases, and producing actionable work for Legal, Safety Intelligence, Trust & Safety Operations, and law-enforcement partners.

Location: San Mateo, California, United States; office attendance is required Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, with optional presence on Monday and Friday.

Salary: $130,110–$154,970 USD per year.

Company

Roblox builds a platform and tools for immersive 3D digital experiences created by a global community of developers and creators.

What you will do

  • Independently manage small- to medium-scope, high-sensitivity investigations from intake through resolution, including cases involving child exploitation, violent extremism, organized fraud, compromised accounts, coordinated abuse, and other high-risk behavior.
  • Gather, preserve, analyze, and corroborate evidence while maintaining provenance, confidentiality, auditability, and strong case hygiene.
  • Develop investigative plans, conduct account, entity, and timeline linkage, and identify cases requiring deeper attribution, network mapping, cross-platform research, or specialist support.
  • Prepare clear case summaries and downstream work products for Legal, Safety Intelligence, Trust & Safety Operations, Law Enforcement Operations, and NCMEC when appropriate.
  • Identify recurring patterns and operational issues, share observations with Policy, Product, Engineering, Detection, Legal, and Safety Operations, and improve playbooks, templates, intake guidance, and quality checks.
  • Keep partners informed, escalate ambiguity or increasing risk, share investigative techniques with peers, and close cases with documented outcomes, residual risk, and follow-up actions.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of experience conducting investigations involving safety, abuse, fraud, security, threats, or other high-risk matters.
  • Experience independently managing small- to medium-scope investigations end to end, including intake, evidence development, analysis, findings, and follow-through, with little day-to-day oversight.
  • Working experience using SQL, spreadsheets, or similar tools and open-source intelligence in an investigative context.
  • Sound investigative judgment, including the ability to distinguish facts, inferences, allegations, unknowns, assumptions, and analytical conclusions.
  • Familiarity with account or entity linkage, timelines, and open-source research, with judgment about when deeper attribution or specialist support is needed.
  • Clear written and verbal communication and the ability to produce concise, defensible case summaries.
  • Ability to turn an investigative question into a practical plan, adjust as evidence changes, and deliver medium-scope work on time.
  • Ability to connect individual cases to policy, product, detection, and user-safety questions; collaborate with peers and partners; build relationships beyond the immediate team; and incorporate feedback.
  • Sound judgment, discretion, curiosity, resilience, and commitment to evidence-based, fair, and proportionate investigations.

Culture & Benefits

  • Mission-driven work focused on safer and more civil shared experiences.
  • Inclusive workplace with equal employment opportunities and reasonable recruiting accommodations.
  • Full-time employees are eligible for equity compensation and company benefits.
  • The role may require reviewing graphic, controversial, and offensive content under Roblox handling policies.
  • Participation in an on-call rotation during weekends and holidays may be required.

Hiring process

  • Investigative work is evaluated through evidence-based, documented case outcomes and the ability to apply team methods, templates, and quality standards.
  • Complex or ambiguous matters require review by a senior investigator or escalation to Specialized Investigations.
