Process Engineer (Optical Fabrication)

Location: Wilton, Connecticut, United States; onsite work in an optics fabrication environment. Some travel may be required for global manufacturing and supplier interactions. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States and legally authorized to access controlled technology under United States Export Administration Regulations.

Base annual salary: $118,875–$174,350.

What you will do

• Develop complex spherical optics using precision CNC generators, high-speed polishers, and centering machines.
• Improve machining strategies, tooling, cycle times, toolpaths, feeds and speeds, work holding, quality, and throughput.
• Collaborate with production, quality, metrology, maintenance, vendors, and engineering to resolve technical and equipment-performance issues.
• Analyze machining performance using SPC, capability studies, JMP, Minitab, and other statistical tools; define process specifications and control limits.
• Conduct hands-on process trials and support qualification of new equipment, materials, and process changes from feasibility through production readiness.
• Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions for quality deviations, maintain 5S organization, and promote EHS safety protocols.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, such as Mechanical, Optical, Materials, or a related field.
• At least 8 years of experience in optical fabrication process engineering or a related manufacturing environment.
• Hands-on experience with optics fabrication techniques, including CNC machining, polishing, and surface inspection.
• Proficiency in root-cause analysis and lean manufacturing tools.
• Familiarity with metrology techniques and quality assurance in optics manufacturing.
• Ability to lead problem-solving initiatives, implement process improvements, manage multiple priorities, and deliver under tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills, including effective collaboration across departments.
• Ability to analyze complex data, interpret technical documents, communicate findings, respond to production issues, and work around manufacturing equipment while wearing required PPE.
• Legal authorization to work in the United States and access controlled technology before beginning work.

Nice to have

• Experience manufacturing spherical or plano optical elements.
• Knowledge of Design of Experiments and Six Sigma methodologies.
• Experience with solid modeling software, NX, CAM software, Mastercam, JMP, Minitab, SAP, or MES systems.
• Knowledge of cleanroom protocols and practices.
