R&D Engineer Project Lead (Optical Design)

Location: Germany, Regensburg; 100% on-site at the Regensburg location. Travel to contract manufacturers worldwide, especially Asia, may be required up to 25%.

What you will do

• Lead development projects for data communication and sensor component products.
• Design optical lenses, components, transceivers, and fiber-coupling solutions for data communication and sensing applications.
• Define requirements for novel optical transceiver products and translate customer needs into precise specifications and designs.
• Develop products from requirements definition and initial design through manufacturability, qualification, and handover to the global manufacturing team.
• Select optical components and materials, define production processes with suppliers and manufacturing partners, and issue product documentation, specifications, and application notes.
• Characterize electro-optical components and devices, create measurement setups, and practically verify simulation results in collaboration with external suppliers.

Requirements

• Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering or Physics.
• At least 8 years of relevant professional experience.
• Proven experience as a Project Lead.
• Knowledge of optical components such as LEDs and photodiodes, as well as optical packages.
• Profound knowledge of materials for semiconductor products.
• Practical experience and interest in measurement technology, hands-on laboratory work, prototyping, and evaluation.
• Self-contained and accurate working style, with the ability to collaborate across different functions and locations.
• Interest in interdisciplinary work spanning electronics, optics, fiber technology, and communication systems.
• English communication skills, both verbal and written; willingness to learn German and develop German communication skills.
• Ability to interface with customers and suppliers and travel to contract manufacturers worldwide, especially in Asia, up to 25% of the time.

Nice to have

• Expertise in Ansys Zemax.
• Experience with Lumerical.
• Python programming experience.
