Principal Software Engineer (AI/ML)

Location: Crossman Service Building, 1395 Crossman Ave, Sunnyvale, California, United States; onsite home office

Salary: $143,000–$286,000 per year, plus performance-based bonuses and possible stock compensation

What you will do

• Lead platform engineering efforts to deliver scalable cloud-native infrastructure and reusable tooling aligned with strategic roadmaps.
• Design and implement AI-enhanced applications and intelligent distributed systems serving millions of users.
• Manage the full software development lifecycle across multiple teams, including design, testing, deployment, maintenance, and incident response.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship while influencing architectural standards and engineering best practices.
• Collaborate with product, business, UX, and other cross-functional partners to translate business needs into technical requirements and measurable success metrics.
• Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, interoperability, security, maintainability, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

• Either a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 5 years of experience in software engineering or a related area; or 7 years of experience in software engineering or a related area.
• Extensive experience in platform engineering leadership, scalable infrastructure, and reusable tooling.
• Expertise in cloud-native architecture and distributed system design for high availability and fault tolerance.
• Strong background in AI/ML integration and building intelligent software systems with Python, Java, and C++.
• Experience leading the full software development lifecycle, including CI/CD, testing, and incident response.
• Technical mentorship, architectural decision-making, and engineering best practices.
• Ability to collaborate cross-functionally and translate business needs into technical solutions.
• Commitment to continuous improvement, innovation, and high-quality deliverables.

Nice to have

• Master's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or a related area and 3 years of experience in software engineering or a related area.
• Experience creating inclusive digital experiences and implementing WCAG 2.2 AA standards.
• Knowledge of assistive technologies, digital accessibility best practices, and Walmart accessibility standards.
