Principal Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Mountain View or San Diego, California, United States

Base pay: $261,500–$353,500 annually in Mountain View; compensation may also include a cash bonus, equity rewards, and benefits.

What you will do

• Define the multiyear technical architecture and roadmap for AI-powered work, including build, integration, and platform-extension decisions.
• Lead reusable capabilities for permission-aware context, agent orchestration, business-system integrations, and AI evaluation.
• Write code, develop reference implementations, lead design reviews, and resolve distributed execution, data freshness, identity, and partial-failure challenges.
• Design human–AI collaboration policies covering agent actions, approvals, traceability, understandability, and recovery.
• Establish evaluation datasets, release criteria, monitoring, and incident practices while balancing accuracy, latency, reliability, privacy, and cost.
• Partner with product managers and functional leaders to select workflows, measure productivity improvements, mentor senior engineers, and align teams on architecture and quality standards.

Requirements

• 15+ years of software engineering experience, including substantial ownership of large enterprise systems and complex distributed architectures.
• Technical leadership across multiple teams and a record of turning long-term architectural direction into shipped software.
• Hands-on production experience with AI capabilities, including language-model APIs, retrieval, context engineering, tool execution, and agent orchestration.
• Strong programming and system-design skills with depth in Python, Java, TypeScript, or comparable languages.
• Experience building cloud services and integrating enterprise applications, identity systems, and data platforms.
• Experience evaluating AI behavior, diagnosing failures, and improving quality, security, performance, and operating cost.
• Sound judgment about when to use AI and when deterministic software or human decisions are more appropriate.
• Ability to influence without direct authority, develop technical leaders, and make decisions amid uncertainty.
• Degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
