Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Recoveries)

Location: Remote Poland; most roles can be located anywhere within Poland. Occasional in-person work at an Affirm office may be required, and all new hires attend an in-person onboarding experience.

Base pay: 365,000–485,000 zł annually. Additional compensation may include equity, monthly stipends, and benefits.

What you will do

• Set the technical strategy for the Recoveries team over a year-long horizon and connect it to business-impacting projects.
• Shape the Recoveries platform by leading cross-team initiatives that optimize recovery strategies and enable flexible customer-facing experiences.
• Strengthen the reliability and scalability of financial and partner integrations across loan placement, recall, payments, remittances, reconciliation, bankruptcy workflows, and recovery experiences.
• Collaborate with product management, design, and analytics throughout the product development lifecycle to manage sustainability, risks, and trade-offs.
• Own operational readiness through monitoring, triage rotations, playbooks, policies, testing, alerting, and on-call support.
• Set code review and design standards, share technical guidance through writing and talks, and develop engineering talent through feedback and mentorship.

Requirements

• 8+ years of total experience as a software engineer.
• Proficiency designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using technologies such as Python, Kotlin, AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience designing and operating correctness-sensitive batch, asynchronous, or data-processing systems, including scheduled workflows, backfills, reconciliation, observability, and robust failure handling.
• Experience architecting solutions across complex systems and organizational boundaries, including changes spanning backend services and customer-facing applications.
• Experience delivering major features or system components, or deprecating existing functionality, through a defined technical and execution plan.
• Ability to write high-quality code that is easy for others to understand and use.
• Comfort working through ambiguity, from low-level language idioms to the architecture of large systems.
• Demonstrated growth and impact through gathering and iterating on feedback from engineering and cross-functional peers.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with a global engineering team.
