Staff Engineer (Database)

Location: US, Remote. Fully remote; up to 5% travel may be required. A minimum 25Mbps consumer-grade broadband connection is required.

Base salary: $229,500–$260,000 annually, plus possible equity in the form of stock options.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for database architecture, schema design, data modeling, indexing, and query contracts across teams.
• Own query performance by analyzing execution plans, implementing fixes, and designing observability that detects regressions.
• Lead reliability engineering for data stores, including replication, failover, backup validation, capacity planning, and incident response.
• Design and own safe production migration workflows with zero-downtime changes, reversibility, and migration testing standards.
• Review application schemas, query patterns, and ORM usage while defining access patterns that prevent production issues.
• Mentor P4 engineers through architecture and code reviews, design reviews, and deep technical pairing.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience with deep specialization in database systems and data infrastructure.
• Expert-level PostgreSQL proficiency, including complex production query tuning, replication topology management, and diagnosing vacuum and locking issues.
• Deep understanding of normalization and denormalization, partial, composite, and covering indexes, partitioning, and connection pooling at scale.
• Experience designing zero-downtime migration workflows in high-volume production environments.
• Experience with graph databases such as Neo4j or equivalent.
• Proficiency with time-series or columnar stores such as ClickHouse, TimescaleDB, or equivalent for high-throughput analytics workloads.
• Experience running database systems in Kubernetes or cloud-managed environments such as RDS, Cloud SQL, or equivalent at production scale.
• Proficiency in Go or Python for building tooling, access layers, and migration infrastructure.
• Experience setting engineering standards, producing architecture documents, driving cross-team database decisions, and mentoring mid-level engineers through design and code review.

Nice to have

• Experience building multi-tenant database architectures where customer data isolation is a hard requirement.
• Cybersecurity experience or experience storing and querying vulnerability, asset, or network topology data at scale.
• Familiarity with eBPF-based database observability tools or advanced profiling approaches.
• Experience with vector databases or embedding stores for ML-adjacent infrastructure.
