Staff Software Engineer, Finance Engineering (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or Seattle, WA; hybrid, with staff expected to work from one of the offices at least 25% of the time.

Annual salary: $320,000–$405,000 USD.

What you will do

• Design and build the finance platform’s governed entry point, including APIs for applications and agents, event buses, vendor and reporting adapters, data-quality gates, and exactly-once processing with replay and backfill.
• Drive development of an append-only accounting ledger and engine with idempotent posting, business-event rules, journal-entry generation, ERP translation, and period locks.
• Build SDKs and frameworks for finance applications and agents.
• Implement controls as code, including immutable audit trails, maker-checker workflows, scoped access, and segregation of duties.
• Build and operate real-time production services such as tax and collections services, owning uptime, latency, throughput, and correctness targets.
• Shape technical direction through architecture, engineering standards, and design reviews while collaborating with Billing, Compute, Infrastructure, finance operations, product owners, and internal audit.

Requirements

• Strong backend engineering experience in a statically typed language such as Go, Java, or Rust, or Python at scale.
• Experience designing and operating high-volume, event-driven systems using publish/subscribe or streaming, with idempotent processing, replay, and backfill.
• Experience designing relational data models and writing SQL for complex, versioned data.
• Experience designing APIs, SDKs, and service-to-service integrations used by other teams.
• Experience building systems with auditability, access-control, or compliance requirements.
• Experience translating requirements from non-engineering partners into technical designs.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including design documentation.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience; relevant field of study demonstrated through coursework, training, or professional experience.

Nice to have

• 10+ years of experience.
• Experience building developer platforms or paved paths.
• Experience with streaming systems such as Pub/Sub or Kafka.
• Experience building with LLMs and agents, including MCP.
• Experience building ledger, sub-ledger, billing, or payments systems.
• Familiarity with double-entry accounting, journal entries, internal controls, audit trails, segregation of duties, change management, or ERP and financial systems such as Workday Financials.
