Principal Industry Engineer (Optical Engineering)

Location: Pudong, Shanghai, China; onsite. Travel is less than 15%, including domestic and occasional international travel.

What you will do

• Lead complex, full-cycle industrial engineering projects for high-end medical device programs, including planning, execution, reporting, and cross-functional delivery.
• Develop and optimize manufacturing processes for new product introductions and sustaining activities; design and validate production layouts, work instructions, SOPs, fixtures, jigs, and tooling.
• Own optical design and optimization for locally built products and sub-assemblies using ZEMAX, including modeling, verification, tolerance analysis, design changes, and localization.
• Analyze optical issues from production lines and the field, including image quality, resolution, contrast, centering, coating, and phase-related problems, and define corrective actions with R&D, quality, and suppliers.
• Design optical inspection tools and test setups, maintain IQC and in-process inspection instructions, and align them with drawings and acceptance criteria.
• Apply DBS and PSP methodologies to continuous improvement and problem solving, maintain SAP routings and cost inputs, support NMPA registration and testing, and mentor junior engineers.

Requirements

• Hands-on optical design capability with ZEMAX, including independent optical design, tolerance analysis, and optimization.
• Proficiency in optical components, optical assembly and alignment, and optical measurement methods used in microscopy.
• Ability to translate optical requirements into shopfloor inspection methods, tooling, and work instructions.
• Proven ability to independently lead complex industrial engineering projects and cross-functional projects while managing stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of high-end medical device manufacturing, regulatory requirements, and quality requirements, including ISO, FDA, and NMPA standards.
• Experience with lean manufacturing, layout optimization, value stream mapping, PSP, and DBS methodologies.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Optical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Automation, or a related field.
• At least 10 years of manufacturing engineering experience, including at least 5 years in high-end medical devices or precision instruments.
• Native Chinese and excellent spoken and written English; ability to lead discussions with global stakeholders.
• Strong ownership, urgency, and proactive mindset.
• Willingness to complete a structured handover of optical documentation, inspection tools, and supplier contacts from the incumbent within the agreed transition period.
