Senior Technical Writer (AI/API)

Location: Austin, TX, United States; hybrid work schedule with work from home and a primary office. Ability to work in US time zones, ideally Central Standard Time, is required.

What you will do

• Create and maintain client-facing API documentation, knowledge-base content, programming guides, and developer resources.
• Develop API references, integration guides, tutorials, quick starts, how-to guides, conceptual content, release documentation, and programming guides.
• Collaborate with engineering, product management, architecture, and client-facing teams to translate technical concepts into clear, accurate, user-focused content.
• Lead documentation initiatives, make informed decisions, and drive projects to completion with minimal oversight.
• Use generative AI tools to research, draft, restructure, analyze, summarize, and improve technical content while applying human editorial judgment.
• Identify automation opportunities and develop prompts, reusable content components, metadata, and knowledge-base workflows that improve documentation production and accessibility.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in English, technical communications, computer science, or a similar field.
• 7+ years of experience as a technical writer for a developer audience at a fast-paced software company.
• Proven experience writing detailed, user-centered API and programming documentation in a fast-paced software environment.
• Ability to understand and communicate interrelationships between topics clearly, present information in a logical hierarchy, and maintain consistency.
• Professional experience using generative AI tools, with the ability to critically evaluate AI-generated content without relying on it without validation.
• Ability to advocate for personal and user needs using experience and facts, and current knowledge of technical documentation and developer enablement resources.
• Ability to work in US time zones, ideally Central Standard Time.
• Experience with Markdown or another markup language, GitHub, Jira, and Swagger.
• Familiarity with one or more programming languages: Java, Go, Python, or TypeScript; a strong writing portfolio is required.

• Advanced degree in a related discipline.

• Experience with Postman, Confluence, or similar tools.
• Experience developing documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Experience building AI prompt libraries or documentation-specific AI workflows beyond day-to-day use.
• Experience designing or documenting an enterprise API solution.
• Experience with a documentation portal or ticketing environment such as ReadMe or Zendesk.
