Software Engineer (AI)

Location: Hybrid, with an average of 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, MD office; U.S. Citizenship required and a U.S. Government Security Clearance must be obtained and maintained.

Salary: $111,662–$150,000 per year.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and implement complex Java software capabilities for computer-based systems.
• Work with engineers to deliver software solutions aligned with client needs.
• Integrate AI coding agents, including Claude Code or Gemini-based agentic workflows, into daily engineering work.
• Use autonomous agents for multi-file feature implementation, codebase refactoring, and automated unit and integration test generation.
• Guide agents through complex multi-repository architectures and audit generated code for security, performance, and architectural alignment.
• Keep current with emerging software development technologies and work effectively under multiple deadlines.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance are required; clearance is not required on day one.
• At least 5 years of software engineering experience with modern Java frameworks and libraries such as Spring or Guava, plus a related bachelor’s degree; or 3 years of relevant experience with a related master’s degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent and 9 years of relevant experience.
• Experience designing enterprise APIs, RESTful web services, microservices architecture, and object-oriented programming.
• Experience with the agile software lifecycle and the Linux operating system.
• Experience with configuration management tools such as Git, Nexus, and Maven.
• Ability to obtain a DoD 8140/8570 compliance certification, such as Security+, within 60 days of hire.
• Strong testing, troubleshooting, responsiveness, inquisitiveness, and ability to work under pressure with multiple deadlines.
• Ability to learn quickly and work independently and collaboratively.
• Ability to work in a hybrid environment, averaging 1–2 days per week at the Columbia, MD office, with flexibility to adapt to schedule changes.

Nice to have

• Daily engineering use of AI tools such as Claude Code or Gemini.
• Experience using autonomous agents for multi-file implementation, refactoring, and automated testing.
• Experience with cloud technologies such as AWS or Azure.
• Experience with distributed databases, NoSQL databases, or full-text search engines such as Elasticsearch, MongoDB, or Solr.
• Scripting experience.
• Familiarity with data lakes or data warehouses.
• Understanding of Agile methodologies and standard development tools such as JIRA, Confluence, and GitHub Enterprise.
