Designer (Electrical Protection Systems)

Location: Plymouth, Michigan, United States; onsite role with travel as needed

What you will do

• Create detailed physical and electrical designs, bills of materials, and job estimates under the direction of a technical lead.
• Prepare CAD drawings, technical specifications, and other project documentation.
• Provide design engineering support to project technical leads and complete assigned work within timelines and budgets.
• Develop and maintain expertise in SEL and industry design practices, equipment, and solutions for electric power system protection and automation.
• Assist with process and tool improvements, provide feedback on enhancements, and follow SEL operating and manufacturing principles.
• Assist, mentor, and train interns, drafters, and entry-level designers.

Requirements

• Associate degree in EET, CAD, Drafting, or a relevant discipline, or equivalent experience for each academic year.
• Six or more years of relevant experience with high-voltage electrical design, including multiple projects involving protective relay control systems.
• Expert competence in CAD drafting using AutoCAD or MicroStation.
• Intermediate understanding of installation requirements for protective relays of different types and functions.
• Ability to learn product concepts and technical details, acquire new skills, and assume new responsibilities.
• Ability to work independently, take ownership of assigned responsibilities, and cooperate in a team environment.
• Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills.
• Willingness to travel as needed.
• Satisfactory background check results and negative drug test results.

Nice to have

• BSEE, BSET, or a related design degree from an accredited college or university.
• Experience testing and commissioning protective relay, process control, and SCADA control systems.
• Electrical utility, consulting, or system integrator experience.
• Knowledge of protective relay applications and/or automation applications.
