Senior Software Engineer (Search)

Location: Manchester ideally or London, United Kingdom; hybrid with office attendance 1–2 days per week. At least one interview stage takes place in person.

What you will do

• Design, implement, and A/B test search and customer-experience features in a cross-functional agile team.
• Own the backend integration with the OpenSearch engine and build resilient, scalable search experiences.
• Build and maintain AWS infrastructure, including serverless and event-driven systems.
• Develop customer-facing frontend features using React and GraphQL.
• Write clean, tested code using AWS, Terraform, Node.js, .NET, C#, TypeScript, GraphQL, GitHub, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with client, engineering, and data teams on integrations and AI/ML-driven features using internal ML inference APIs and external LLMs; coach colleagues and promote engineering best practices.

Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience with OpenSearch, Elasticsearch, or a comparable search-engine technology; OpenSearch experience is particularly valuable.
• Experience across frontend and backend development, with an interest in growing toward an Engineering Lead role.
• Experience with some of the technology stack: AWS serverless, React, Node.js, TypeScript, C#, and GraphQL.
• Ability to collaborate on complex technical tasks, contribute to design discussions, and deliver high-quality solutions.
• Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with non-technical audiences.
• Willingness to learn new processes, techniques, and technologies.

Nice to have

• Experience working with serverless, event-driven systems.

Hiring process

• Recruiter screening call lasting 15–30 minutes.
• Take-home technical test, pairing interview lasting 60–90 minutes, and system design interview lasting 60 minutes.
• Final culture/team-fit interview lasting 30 minutes, followed by an offer; at least one stage is conducted in person.
