Senior Accountant, Cost and Manufacturing Accounting (Medical Devices)

Location: Austin, Texas, United States; onsite role.

Base salary: $95,000–$177,000 USD per year, plus equity compensation in the form of RSUs for full-time employees.

What you will do

• Build and own the cost accounting function, including cost centers, allocation and absorption methodologies, standard versus actual costing, product costing, inventory valuation, cost of goods sold reporting, and manufacturing variance analysis.
• Partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations, and Software to translate product manufacturing into accounting processes covering materials, inventory movements, labor, equipment time, and manufacturing overhead.
• Define accounting requirements for the internally developed ERP and manufacturing systems, including inventory valuation, manufacturing cost capture, and financial data flows into the ledger.
• Research complex U.S. GAAP matters and prepare technical memoranda and accounting policies covering inventory and manufacturing costs, internal-use software and cloud computing capitalization, and revenue recognition.
• Design, document, and test internal controls over financial reporting; perform management testing independently of activities prepared or executed.
• Prepare audit-ready documentation, support the external audit, test month-end close controls and reconciliations, and improve cost visibility, data quality, and accounting processes.

Requirements

• 7+ years of accounting experience, including technical accounting research and documentation.
• Bachelor’s degree or above in accounting.
• Experience with inventory, product costing, and cost of goods sold.
• Accounting experience in manufacturing, hardware, medical device, or other physical-product businesses.
• Ability to research unsettled questions, reach a position under U.S. GAAP, and clearly document analysis and supporting evidence for audit review.
• Ability to work independently and partner with Engineering, Manufacturing, Operations, and Software, translating product design and manufacturing into cost centers and cost data.
• Willingness to perform detailed accounting work while building scalable processes and navigating ambiguity at a high-growth company.

Nice to have

• CPA or CMA designation.
• Big Four, public accounting, or formal technical accounting group experience.
• Experience preparing audit-ready documentation and supporting external audits.
• Experience defining accounting requirements for ERP implementation, configuration, or in-house development, particularly inventory and costing functionality, with an understanding of data flows from BOM to PO to receipt to the ledger.
• Experience in complex or vertically integrated manufacturing environments, including robotics, medical devices, or advanced hardware.
• Experience designing, documenting, or testing internal controls over financial reporting, including management testing.
• Experience at a company transitioning from development to commercial manufacturing.
• Experience with standard costing, variance analysis, or absorption costing.
• Technical accounting experience with internal-use software and cloud computing capitalization or revenue recognition.
• Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
