Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Hybrid in San Francisco; New York City and San Francisco base salary locations are specified.

Salary: $200,000–$300,000 base salary per year, plus equity.

What you will do

• Lead and grow a team of product engineers through expectations, coaching, feedback, hiring, and high standards.
• Partner with product, design, clinical, AI, and operations teams to define problems, priorities, scope, and success criteria.
• Contribute production code, guide architecture, review changes, investigate technical issues, debug production problems, and ship through short planning cycles.
• Guide work across user experiences, backend services, data models, integrations, AI workflows, and complete cross-boundary solutions.
• Turn AI capabilities into reliable product behavior through interfaces, orchestration, safeguards, and real-use evaluations; improve coding-agent workflows and automation.
• Own service operations with Platform, review usage and production performance, and improve products and engineering decisions after launch.

Requirements

• Experience managing and developing engineers building and operating user-facing products or the systems behind them.
• Strong software engineering background with current ability to contribute production code and solve difficult technical problems.
• Experience shipping across frontend and backend systems, with depth in at least one area and ability to lead work across the others.
• Strong product judgment, including clarifying problems, challenging assumptions, choosing scope, and connecting engineering decisions to user outcomes.
• Daily experience directing coding agents and evidence of improving how a team builds software with them.
• Practical judgment about AI systems, including model and agent selection, behavior evaluation, explicit controls, and human judgment.
• Record of improving engineering throughput while maintaining quality, reliability, and maintainability.
• Experience hiring, coaching, giving direct feedback, and helping engineers grow; clear communication of tradeoffs and risks.
• Sound judgment concerning patient safety, privacy, security, accessibility, and production reliability. Many candidates have eight or more years of engineering experience, including two or more years managing engineers.

Nice to have

• Experience with AI products, agent orchestration, evaluation systems, healthcare, or another regulated field.
• Experience with the full product stack is useful but not required: Next.js, React, TypeScript, Swift, Kotlin, Python, FastAPI, MariaDB, SQLAlchemy, Redis, Celery, Docker, AWS ECS, AI providers, telehealth systems, healthcare APIs, and FHIR-based workflows.
• A specific degree, title, or exact tool match is not required.
