Staff Platform Engineer (Cloud Platform)

Location: Hybrid; the selected candidate must report at least three times a week to Austin, Texas; Mountain View, California; Seattle, Washington; or Warren, Michigan, United States.

Salary: $160,200–$333,400 base salary range; bonus potential is also available.

What you will do

• Design and build core internal cloud platform capabilities end to end, from API design through production operations.
• Build the default golden paths for software delivery, migrate workloads without downtime, and improve the platform based on developer friction.
• Replace manual and ticket-driven provisioning with declarative, API-driven infrastructure for networking, identity, and accounts.
• Design APIs, CLI tools, and MCP tools for engineers and AI agents, keeping interfaces simple and consistent.
• Partner with SRE on availability, scalability, SLOs, on-call practices, observability, and incident reviews.
• Set technical direction, write design documents, mentor senior engineers, review designs and code, and work directly with application teams.

Requirements

• 10+ years of experience building and operating production infrastructure or platforms, including several years in a senior or staff role with cross-team technical leadership.
• Deep hands-on Kubernetes experience in production at scale, including cluster operations, multi-tenancy, autoscaling, and upgrades.
• Strong software engineering skills in Go or a comparable language, with experience writing production code.
• Experience designing and running an internal developer platform, PaaS, or cloud control plane used by other engineers.
• Expertise in infrastructure as code and declarative provisioning using Terraform, Crossplane, or Kubernetes operators and controllers.
• Solid knowledge of cloud networking, identity, and security, preferably on Azure.
• Experience improving reliability through SLOs, observability, and blameless incident practices.
• Strong product sense for developer experience, including CLI output, error messages, documentation, and architecture.
• Ability to simplify systems, communicate clearly in writing, and bring skeptical stakeholders along with sound designs.

Nice to have

• Experience with Istio or another service mesh, Gateway API, ArgoCD, Kargo, KEDA, Karpenter, or Kyverno.
• Experience building or migrating a large platform with zero downtime for tenants.
• Experience with Azure Event Hubs, Kafka, or other event-streaming platforms.
• Experience with cell-based or multi-region architectures.
• Experience building MCP servers or other interfaces for AI agents.
• Experience with cloud cost optimization and FinOps data pipelines.
• Contributions to open-source projects in the cloud-native ecosystem.
