Engineering Director, Vercel for Platforms (AI)

Location: San Francisco, US; hybrid based in San Francisco, with a remote-friendly culture.

Base pay: $262,000–$348,000 per year in San Francisco; compensation outside San Francisco may be adjusted based on employee location. Total compensation may also include benefits, equity-based compensation, and bonus or variable pay.

What you will do

• Lead and grow the engineering team responsible for Vercel for Platforms through hiring, coaching, mentorship, and career development.
• Partner with Product, Design, and engineering teams to define roadmap priorities and deliver product goals.
• Provide technical direction across deployment infrastructure, domains, identity, billing, observability, and developer tooling.
• Review and occasionally contribute code to stay close to the technology and unblock the team.
• Drive operational excellence through engineering processes, incident management, and continuous improvement.
• Balance short-term product delivery with long-term technical quality and platform scalability.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience building and operating large-scale platforms or multi-tenant systems.
• 5+ years of experience managing engineers.
• Strong technical foundation, including the ability to review system designs, understand data model challenges, and evaluate infrastructure tradeoffs.
• Experience translating business goals into technical strategy and driving cross-organizational alignment.
• Experience establishing trust, psychological safety, and clear expectations, with the ability to provide timely and candid feedback.
• Strong facilitation skills for technical conflicts, including listening, synthesizing, deciding, and bringing the team along.
• Clear communication skills, including setting expectations, giving direct feedback, and building trust across teams.
