Construction Surveyor and Layout Lead (VDC)

Location: Greater San Diego Area; onsite construction and field coordination role in San Diego, California.

Annual base pay range: $120,000–$150,000.

What you will do

• Establish and maintain site control points and primary and secondary control networks across assigned jobsites.
• Perform form board surveys, construction staking and layout, field verification, elevation checks, and plumbing, electrical, and penetration surveys before slab pours.
• Perform quality assurance on total station setups, including backsight verification and check shots, and maintain control registers and change history.
• Validate field conditions, survey data, layouts, and CAD/BIM models using VDC workflows and tools including Civil 3D and Navisworks.
• Coordinate with field operations, superintendents, trades, survey crews, VDC, and subcontractors to resolve discrepancies and ensure current drawings and models are used.
• Document field information and layout issues, including overlays in Procore Observations, to reduce rework and construction risk.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 3–5 years of hands-on construction surveying experience preferred.
• Experience with form board surveys, staking and layout work, and field verification activities.
• Ability to independently perform standard surveying tasks with minimal supervision.
• Experience identifying discrepancies in field conditions, plans, or layouts and communicating corrections to field teams and subcontractors.
• Working knowledge of construction plans, site layouts, grading, utilities, and building control points, with a strong understanding of surveying principles and field measurement techniques.
• Experience using GPS, robotic total stations, laser levels, or similar surveying equipment and technology.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications, and site plans.
• Strong communication and coordination skills for working with field personnel, subcontractors, and project teams.

Nice to have

• California Professional Land Surveyor certification.
• Surveying certifications, technical training, or related coursework.
