Software Engineer II (Backend)

Location: HQ in the United States; team based out of New York City and Chicago.

Salary: $139,500–$158,000 annually in New York; geographic-specific salary structures apply.

What you will do

• Build highly scalable and reliable additions to the food ordering and delivery platform.
• Deliver, deploy, maintain, and monitor applications and overall platform performance.
• Evaluate platform tools, technologies, frameworks, and vendors with senior team members.
• Write performant code, review peer code, and ensure feature security and scalability.
• Contribute to technical debt and feature backlogs and identify platform improvements.
• Collaborate across the domain while taking ownership of upstream and downstream dependencies.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in a science, programming, or engineering-related field.
• 5+ years of experience building highly scalable consumer-facing applications; e-commerce experience is preferred.
• Experience with Java or other object-oriented languages.
• Experience architecting, designing, and developing testable, fault-tolerant, performant software designed for future evolution.
• Experience with complex systems composed of multiple networked components and highly available distributed systems, including 4x9s uptime.
• AWS or similar cloud platform experience.
• Service automated testing experience, including JUnit/testing, Mockito, and JMeter or Gatling.
• Strong data structures and algorithms fundamentals, observability development, and experience modeling system resource requirements as load changes.
• Docker or similar containerized solutions and CI/CD tools such as Gradle, Jenkins, Spinnaker, or similar technologies.
• Individual-contributor leadership through prioritization, self-management, and collaboration across teams to drive results.
• Commitment to improving customer experience, preventing poor customer experiences during outages, and maintaining service availability.
• Ability to challenge the status quo, learn new concepts, solve problems creatively, and take accountability for developed software.

Nice to have

• Distributed database experience with Cassandra or a similar NoSQL database.
• Experience in e-commerce applications.
