Protection Engineer (f/m/d) for Auxiliary Power Supply Systems

Location: Erlangen, Bavaria, Germany; flexible and remote work is offered, with domestic and international travel required for customer, supplier, and site clarifications.

What you will do

• Analyze customer specifications and grid code requirements to develop compliant protection and control concepts, including automatic transfer systems.
• Design and review protection schemes, interlocking concepts, communication architectures, and automation solutions for medium- and low-voltage systems.
• Prepare and review protection and control philosophies, single-line diagrams, interface lists, signal lists, I/O lists, communication matrices, and relay settings documentation.
• Configure and parameterize protection relays and automation devices using engineering tools such as Siemens DIGSI 5.
• Develop IEC 61850 communication concepts, including GOOSE messaging and process interfaces.
• Coordinate with Auxiliary Power, Control & Protection, SCADA, System Design, and Commissioning engineers; support FAT, FPT, and commissioning activities.

Requirements

• University degree in electrical engineering and long-term experience in protection and automation engineering for medium-voltage systems.
• Strong experience with protection relay configuration tools such as Siemens DIGSI 5.
• Practical expertise with IEC 61850 substation applications and relevant engineering tools, plus understanding of applicable IEC standards and distribution network planning.
• Professional working proficiency in German and English.
• Willingness to travel domestically and internationally for customer, supplier, and site clarifications.
• Initiative, proactive collaboration, creativity, quality and result orientation, intercultural awareness, and the ability to work across functions.

Nice to have

• Experience with other protection platforms such as ABB PCM600/CAP505, Schneider Easergy Studio, Eberle, MR, or equivalent.
