Engineering Manager for Discovery (AI)

Location: San Francisco, US; hybrid, with 3 days per week in the office for a full business day.

Annual salary: $212K–$318K, plus equity and benefits.

What you will do

• Lead the Discovery engineering team responsible for care search, relevance, scheduling, and discovery experiences across member- and staff-facing applications.
• Define and execute a technical roadmap balancing user-facing improvements, shared platform capabilities, scalability, and operational reliability.
• Improve search relevance, usability, accuracy, reliability, and conversion from discovery to the next action.
• Strengthen shared search infrastructure, data foundations, and reusable capabilities across multiple applications.
• Establish data-driven experimentation, measurement, automated testing, observability, and performance practices.
• Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and engineering teams while contributing to architecture discussions, code reviews, and implementation when appropriate, approximately 15% of the time.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 3+ years of experience managing a team of approximately 5 or more engineers in a product or platform engineering environment.
• Strong software engineering background with experience designing and operating backend services, APIs, and data-intensive systems.
• Experience owning and evolving production systems end-to-end, including architecture, delivery, performance, and operational reliability.
• Demonstrated ability to partner with Product and cross-functional stakeholders to deliver measurable product or business outcomes.
• Track record of building, mentoring, and developing high-performing engineering teams.
• Product-minded, technically credible, systems-oriented, data-driven, and collaborative leadership approach.

Nice to have

• Experience with search infrastructure, information retrieval, ranking, relevance optimization, or knowledge graphs.
• Experience building shared services and data platforms used by multiple applications or engineering teams.
• Experience building member-facing or internal operational workflows with a strong understanding of usability and performance.
• Familiarity with healthcare navigation, provider and coverage data, scheduling systems, EMR integrations, or regulated health data.
• Experience using AI-native development tools such as Cursor, Claude Code, or agent-based workflows to improve engineering productivity and quality.
