Engineering Manager, Materia AI

Location: Hybrid role based in the United States, with the primary location in New York, New York. Eligible office locations may include New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine, McLean, and Washington, DC.

Base compensation: $158,900–$295,100 USD for eligible US locations; $183,100–$340,000 USD in certain listed locations. Annual bonus may also apply.

What you will do

• Build, hire, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of backend and AI engineers.
• Lead engineering health, code review, delivery practices, and scalable process improvements.
• Partner with Product, Design, Engineering, Labs, and Research to set priorities and technical direction.
• Shape agentic workflows and scope AI-driven features for CoCounsel Tax from design through delivery.
• Remove cross-team blockers and improve execution across the broader CoCounsel Tax organization.
• Develop expertise in tax systems and automation opportunities.

Requirements

• 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience and 3+ years managing engineering teams.
• Experience leading teams that deliver production-grade backend systems at scale.
• Strong backend development and cloud infrastructure foundation, including architecture, code reviews, and design decisions.
• Experience partnering with Product, Design, and cross-functional leaders on strategy and execution.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to set goals, provide feedback, and align stakeholders.
• Ability to work in a hybrid office-based role in the United States.

Nice to have

• Experience shipping AI-driven or agentic systems in production, including LLM orchestration, RAG, agent frameworks, or evaluation pipelines.
• Strong technical foundation in Python and AWS.
• Experience with modern LLM APIs such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
• Experience managing mixed backend and AI/ML engineering teams.
• Exposure to tax, accounting, or other regulated professional domains.
