Staff Software Engineer (AI)

Location: On-site / Hybrid in Austin, TX; candidates must be authorized to work in the U.S. without employment-based visa sponsorship.

What you will do

• Lead backend architecture for an on-premises network security management appliance handling distributed device configuration, policy compilation, health monitoring, and high-volume event ingestion.
• Modernize and modularize a large Java EE/WildFly monolith while preserving customer upgrade paths, backward compatibility, and uptime.
• Own relational and analytical data architecture and performance across MariaDB, ColumnStore, and RDS, including migrations, query optimization, pooling, and transactional integrity.
• Deliver full-stack fleet-management capabilities with REST and SOAP APIs, React, and TypeScript.
• Build and integrate cloud microservices using Go, Node.js, Python, and AWS serverless and event-driven services.
• Investigate distributed-systems failures, concurrency issues, memory leaks, and performance bottlenecks; define resilience, HA, failover, replication, disaster recovery, automated testing, and AI-augmented engineering practices.

Requirements

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience designing, building, and maintaining enterprise-grade production software, with significant backend depth.
• Deep Java and JVM expertise in large, multi-threaded, high-concurrency codebases, including memory management, garbage collection tuning, thread safety, and profiling.
• Enterprise Java experience with WildFly or comparable application servers and Java EE/Jakarta EE technologies including EJBs, JPA, JMS, and JAX-RS.
• Relational and analytical database architecture experience with MariaDB, MySQL, ColumnStore, or PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, query tuning, transactions, and zero-downtime migrations.
• Full-stack experience with React, TypeScript, modern CSS/build tooling, and RESTful APIs.
• Experience maintaining RESTful and SOAP services with strict backward compatibility.
• Experience refactoring large mature codebases, introducing abstraction boundaries and design patterns without breaking compatibility.
• Linux systems programming and networking fundamentals, including POSIX, process lifecycle, IPC, sockets, TCP/IP, and diagnostic tooling.
• Experience integrating agentic AI tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot, with rigorous verification and testing of generated code; strong debugging, communication, architecture, leadership, design-review, and mentoring skills.
• BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice to have

• Cloud-native microservices experience on AWS with Go, Node.js, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, S3, AWS IoT, and CloudWatch.
• Network security appliance or fleet-management domain experience, including firewalls, IPS/IDS, SIEM, security consoles, or network telemetry.
• Infrastructure-as-code and cloud automation experience with Terraform, Terragrunt, or Serverless Framework.
• Experience with event streaming, message brokers, or asynchronous processing such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS/SNS, or JMS.
• Experience with Playwright, Vitest, Jest, or Pact; migration of legacy build, dependency, and CI/CD systems; open-source contributions or technical community leadership.
