Senior Software Engineer, Algorithms Engineering

Location: Hybrid at Flock HQ in Encinitas, California, USA, targeting candidates local to or willing to relocate to the San Diego/Encinitas or Los Angeles area. In-office days are Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday.

Salary: $145,000–$165,000 per year, plus equity eligibility and benefits.

What you will do

• Design, build, test, and maintain web applications using Java, React, and TypeScript.
• Develop scalable, maintainable, and high-performance RESTful and gRPC APIs.
• Own features through production, including monitoring, debugging, support, and iterative improvements.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver customer-focused features.
• Contribute to system architecture, database-backed application state, refactoring, and third-party or open-source framework integration.
• Participate in code reviews, root cause analysis, and scheduled on-call rotations.

Requirements

• 3–6 years of professional software engineering experience, preferably building and maintaining production web applications.
• Strong Java backend development experience, including familiarity with Spring Boot.
• Proficiency in TypeScript, JavaScript, and React or similar frontend frameworks.
• Understanding of data modeling, relational databases, and SQL.
• Strong knowledge of data structures, client/server architecture, and application scaling trade-offs.
• Experience with Git, modern IDEs, and build or deployment tools such as Gradle, Docker, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot or Claude Code.
• Experience supporting production systems, including debugging, root cause analysis, and performance optimization.
• Ability to break down complex technical problems, deliver high-quality solutions, communicate effectively, collaborate cross-functionally, and provide guidance to peers when needed.
