Education Specialist

Location: Iowa City, Iowa, United States; combination of office, community, home, and field-based work with regular travel throughout the service delivery area. Occasional evening and weekend work is required.

Pay rate: $21–$22.80 per hour.

What you will do

• Coordinate adult education classes, including scheduling, enrollment, registration, assessments, and database reporting.
• Teach established educational classes and learning activities for multilingual refugee and immigrant clients using approved curricula and interpreters.
• Pair youth participants with volunteers and interns for tutoring and mentoring, and provide direct tutoring or mentoring when needed.
• Support tutors and mentors and incorporate computer-based learning into educational services.
• Collaborate with caseworkers to distribute language-specific and culturally appropriate recruitment materials and community resources.
• Connect clients with internal and external services, track attendance, referrals, progress, and other program data, and comply with grant and program requirements.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• At least one year of relevant experience working with refugees, immigrants, or other diverse populations required.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.
• Cross-cultural understanding and strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Computer proficiency, especially Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook; experience with web-based data-entry systems and databases is strongly preferred.
• Ability to teach and present effectively through a variety of mediums and work as part of a multicultural team.
• Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle with current insurance, and ability to travel regularly throughout the service delivery area for remote, home, or field-based teaching.

Nice to have

• Coursework or training in Education or a related field.
• TESOL certification and/or classroom TESOL instruction experience in an adult education program.
• Bilingual ability in a client language such as Swahili, Arabic, Dari, Pashto, Spanish, or French.
