Principal Software Test Engineer - Solution Engineering – Customer Solution Validation (Networking)

Location: Hybrid in Sunnyvale, California, United States; work from an HPE office an average of 2 days per week.

Salary: USD 172,000–349,000 annual base salary in California; variable incentives may also be offered.

What you will do

• Lead validation of customer solutions and complex, large-scale networking deployments.
• Translate customer requirements, architectures, and operational environments into repeatable validation frameworks.
• Architect and evolve automation for functional, integration, system, resiliency, scale, performance, and solution validation.
• Establish continuous validation practices through CI/CD and improve quality, observability, scalability, serviceability, and engineering productivity.
• Investigate complex failures using logs, metrics, traces, telemetry, and diagnostic frameworks, including root-cause analysis across teams.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, influence architecture and engineering decisions, and contribute to patents, publications, standards, or architectural proposals.

Requirements

• Expert-level programming in Python, Go, or C++, with deep proficiency in at least one language.
• Extensive experience designing automation platforms, frameworks, and quality engineering ecosystems, including integration of large-scale automated testing into CI/CD environments and delivery of impactful automation initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of Linux/UNIX, networking, processes, memory management, and system internals.
• Extensive experience validating distributed and multi-component systems, with hands-on expertise configuring and validating multi-vendor networking environments.
• Experience supporting service provider, enterprise, and cloud networking deployments.
• Strong knowledge of performance testing and traffic-generation platforms such as Ixia and Spirent.
• Deep expertise in system-level and end-to-end validation, including multi-feature, longevity, resiliency, interoperability, scale, performance, fault injection, recovery validation, root-cause analysis, and advanced troubleshooting.
• Demonstrated ability to deliver visible technical impact, influence engineering decisions and technical direction, mentor engineers, and contribute to cross-functional technical initiatives.

Nice to have

• 12+ years of industry experience.
• Advanced expertise in Layer 2, Layer 3, TCP/IP, routing, MPLS, EVPN, and data center technologies.
• Experience with network operating systems, cloud infrastructure, observability platforms, and distributed architectures.
• Working knowledge of JUNOS.
• JNCIA, CCIA, or equivalent industry certification.
• Experience using AI-assisted engineering tools for automation development, test generation, diagnostics, failure analysis, and productivity improvements.
