Machine Learning Engineer (Data and Digital Catalyst)

Location: South San Francisco, California, United States of America; hybrid with onsite presence expected at least 3 days per week. Relocation assistance is not available.

Expected annual salary: $147,600–$274,000. The position is open to SE5 and SE6 levels, with final leveling determined after interviews. A discretionary annual bonus may be available.

What you will do

• Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable AI/ML scientific web applications and backend systems.
• Build tools for evaluating AI/ML model performance and understanding AI quality.
• Partner with product managers, scientists, computational scientists, AI/ML experts, and DevOps colleagues to define user needs and technical specifications.
• Develop systems for collecting, structuring, and storing scientific data for analytics and machine learning.
• Implement and evaluate AI/ML algorithms and analytical techniques, including model training and inference at scale.
• Contribute to architecture, code reviews, development processes, and cross-stack engineering work.

Requirements

• Strong proficiency with AI/ML frameworks, libraries, and toolsets.
• Expert knowledge of statistics, machine learning theory, and algorithms.
• Strong knowledge of ML performance optimization and GPU best practices.
• Experience with Kubernetes, relational databases, NoSQL databases, or data lakes.
• Experience with cloud-native architectures in public clouds, ideally AWS.
• Proven understanding and application of engineering best practices.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusted partnerships with internal and external collaborators.
• Ability to quickly acquire new technologies and programming languages, with a passion for continuous learning.

Nice to have

• Experience with biological data, ideally multimodal, and scientific processes.
• Experience working with scientists or in a research environment.
• Experience with workflow automation, GenAI, and/or agents.
