Backend Engineer (AI/Biotech)

What you will do

• Build backend systems that make the automated laboratory programmable.
• Architect data pipelines for large-scale protein characterization data.
• Design APIs integrating laboratory instruments, robotics, and scheduling systems.
• Process heterogeneous data from binding kinetics, enzyme activity, chromatography, and other physical instruments into structured datasets.
• Work with scientists and automation engineers to translate molecular biology workflows into reliable, scalable software.
• Develop systems that enable precise biology experiments with minimal human intervention.

Requirements

• Strong experience designing and building production backend systems.
• Experience architecting reliable and maintainable software; Python and TypeScript are used on the backend, with Postgres.
• Experience building data pipelines and processing infrastructure for large volumes of heterogeneous physical-instrument data.
• Comfort with API design and systems integration, including connecting instruments, robotics, and scheduling systems.
• Genuine interest in biology; prior biology background is not required.
• High autonomy and a founder mindset, with the ability to identify priorities and act independently.
• Pragmatic problem-solving focused on outcomes rather than specific stacks or tools.
• Ability to write code primarily with AI while having sufficient software experience to evaluate code quality and architecture.
