Director, Mechanical Engineering (AI Infrastructure)

Salary: £175K–£225K per year, with equity and a discretionary bonus

What you will do

• Own mechanical engineering input, design standards, reference designs, and technical assurance across AI factories in EMEA and AMER from concept through commissioning and handover.
• Lead liquid cooling architecture covering facility water systems, technology cooling systems, coolant distribution units, rack requirements, GPU requirements, and thermal requirements.
• Support live projects, resolve technical issues, and balance performance, energy and water efficiency, cost, delivery speed, reliability, maintainability, and scalability.
• Track AI hardware and cooling technology evolution, including rack densities, warmer water operation, and emerging cooling methods, translating developments into mechanical standards.
• Coordinate with electrical, controls, structural, procurement, operations, CTO, CPO, and external design partners on integrated designs and equipment standardisation.
• Provide status, risk, and decision reporting; direct external mechanical design partners, mentor engineers, and build the mechanical engineering team.

Requirements

• Degree in mechanical or building services engineering.
• Significant experience in data centre or mission critical mechanical engineering, including senior technical leadership of mechanical design on large-scale programmes.
• Deep expertise in data centre cooling, including chilled water and heat rejection systems, air-side design, hydraulic design, and cooling control philosophy.
• Experience developing and deploying mechanical design standards, reference designs, or basis of design documents for a hyperscale, colocation, or large-scale data centre developer.
• Hands-on experience designing and delivering high-density and liquid-cooled environments for AI and HPC workloads, including direct-to-chip cooling, coolant distribution units, and facility water systems.
• Understanding of how GPU cluster thermal requirements drive facility design.
• Familiarity with European and North American data centre mechanical codes and standards, including ASHRAE guidelines and NFPA standards.
• Strong commercial judgement when balancing capex, schedule, reliability, and operability.
• Confident communication of complex technical trade-offs to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives, plus a collaborative approach to cross-functional work and standards ownership.

• Chartered or professional engineer status, such as CEng or PE.
