TL;DR
Senior Mechanical Engineer, Reliability (Quantum Computing): Maintaining and improving live quantum-computing fleets by diagnosing mechanical, vacuum, cryogenic, and thermal faults with an accent on uptime, failure analysis, and configuration management. Focus on designing and testing recurring-fault solutions, implementing upgrades in operating systems, and maintaining PLM records, build documentation, and engineering change requests.
Location: Oxford, England, United Kingdom
Company
hirify.global develops integrated quantum computing, networking, sensing, and security solutions. Oxford Ionics is now part of hirify.global and is building practical quantum computers.
What you will do
Root-cause mechanical, vacuum, cryogenic, and thermal faults on live quantum-computing systems and prioritize issues by their impact on fleet uptime.
Analyze failed parts and track recurring failure modes.
Design, prototype, and test solutions to recurring reliability challenges.
Implement mechanical changes that enable electrical and optical system improvements.
Write assembly and upgrade instructions and work with operations to deploy upgrades into live systems.
Maintain PLM data, build records, and engineering change requests so fixes carry into future builds.
Requirements
Mechanical engineering background with a strong design focus and 4+ years of relevant industry experience.
Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent practical experience including apprenticeship routes.
Proactive and self-directed approach, willingness to ask for input, and ability to work on systems where uptime matters.
Ability to collaborate across electrical, optical, science, operations, and other disciplines.
For applicable US technical work, access to export-controlled technology may require verification of U.S. Person status, a necessary license, or confirmation of a license exception.
Nice to have
Established CAD ability, ideally SolidWorks, plus geometric dimensioning and tolerancing and PLM experience.
Experience with cryogenic, vacuum, or optomechanical systems.
Structured root-cause and failure analysis experience, such as 5 Whys or failure mode and effects analysis.
Ability to explain technical trade-offs across disciplines.
Quantum experience is not required.
Culture & Benefits
Collaborative, supportive environment with autonomy, productivity, respect, and opportunities for different voices and viewpoints.
Base salary, bonus, equity, and benefits package.
Medical, dental, and vision plans; matching 401(k); unlimited PTO; and paid holidays.
