Regulatory and Legal Policy Expert (AI)

Location: Washington, DC; hybrid or full-time in-person work, with occasional travel to the Berkeley home office or other locations

Salary: $120,000–$160,000 per year, depending on experience

What you will do

• Support the Head of Policy on regulatory and legal policy initiatives.
• Conduct detailed policy research and develop floor-ready legislative text, executive branch proposals, and Federal Register filings.
• Assess the feasibility of policy mechanisms in response to Supreme Court rulings, new legislation, and related developments.
• Advocate for policy recommendations with government stakeholders, media, and the nonprofit community.
• Take a substantial lead on legal and regulatory policy deliverables that may change every few months.

Requirements

• Legal, regulatory, Executive Branch, Congressional, think tank, startup, nonprofit, or Capitol Hill experience relevant to policy development.
• Proven track record of advocating effectively for policy changes for at least five years across stakeholders with diverse views.
• Understanding of Washington, DC policy processes, communities, and mechanisms.
• Familiarity with AI national security risks, including loss of control, recursive self-improvement, catastrophic misuse, and rapidly growing AI capabilities.
• Comfort with a project-based approach and changing priorities.
• A law degree is beneficial but not required.
