Staff Platform Engineer (Materia AI)

Location: Hybrid role based in the United States, with the primary location in New York, New York. Other possible locations include Frisco, Texas; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Eagan, Minnesota; and Toronto, Canada. Eligible US office locations may also include New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Irvine, McLean, and Washington, DC.

Base compensation: $158,000–$293,000 USD annually for eligible higher-compensation locations; $137,100–$254,700 USD for other eligible US locations. The role may also include an annual performance bonus.

What you will do

• Design, develop, and evolve cloud-native platforms supporting generative AI agents and orchestration systems.
• Build scalable, resilient, secure, and cost-effective production infrastructure using Kubernetes, AWS, GCP, Vercel, and AI platforms.
• Create golden-path reference implementations and CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions, Playwright, and Snyk.
• Develop Go command-line tools and services that improve workflows from local development through production deployment.
• Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, and LLM observability solutions while improving DORA metrics.
• Collaborate with AI/ML engineers, frontend developers, product managers, SREs, and a broader group of more than 150 product and engineering professionals.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in backend development, platform engineering, production engineering, or SRE.
• Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining backend services and client interfaces for engineering teams.
• Deep troubleshooting experience with DNS, TCP/IP, and TLS protocols.
• Hands-on experience with cloud-native services, Kubernetes or ECS, object storage, managed PostgreSQL, serverless functions, VPCs or service mesh, IAM, infrastructure as code, secrets management, and pub/sub systems.
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to have

• Fluency in Go, Python, Rust, or another systems-level language.
• Experience with Terraform, CUE, AI-driven systems, agent-based architectures, LLM evaluation tools, OpenAI or Anthropic APIs, and SOC 2-compliant systems.
• Knowledge of vector databases, embeddings, search-based AI, infrastructure design, end-to-end testing, automation, middleware, and RPC/REST API design.
