AI Systems Engineer

Location: Oakland, California, or remote within US timezones; quarterly team retreats and occasional in-person coworking events require travel.

Salary: $185,000–$220,000 for L3, $220,000–$260,000 for Senior/L4, or $250,000–$320,000 for Expert/Staff/L5, plus equity.

What you will do

• Understand real decision-making problems in scientific R&D and commercial strategy through work with users and domain experts.
• Design evaluations for complex reasoning tasks using expert judgment, example inspection, and quantitative analysis.
• Improve agent behavior through experiments with problem decomposition, context, tools, information seeking, and self-checking.
• Design reliable software architectures, data structures, and component boundaries for reasoning workflows and evaluations.
• Build and evaluate workflows for research prioritization, protein target selection, clinical trial forecasting, and business development strategy.
• Write maintainable code, review designs, test and monitor changes, and integrate systems into the product.

Requirements

• Strong ability to reason rigorously about ambiguous problems, hidden assumptions, conflicting evidence, and uncertainty.
• Ability to independently write and debug code, work with data and model APIs, and implement experiments in a maintained codebase.
• Comfort with Python or a comparable programming language.
• Practical familiarity with language model capabilities and limitations.
• Strong engineering and architectural judgment, including experience building understandable and extensible software.
• Ability to communicate clearly with engineers, product, design, users, and domain experts.

Nice to have

• Experience applying domain expertise across multiple scientific or business areas.
• Background in original economics research, quantitative trading, research systems, or substantial technical projects.
• Experience using AI coding assistants effectively while verifying designs and results.
