Applied AI Engineer

Location: Hybrid in San Carlos, California, with 3+ days per week onsite; all work must be performed in the United States.

Salary: $224,000–$260,000 base salary annually, plus equity.

What you will do

• Design and implement agent architectures for tool use, planning, orchestration, state management, memory, and context engineering.
• Build retrieval systems, structured representations, and agent-accessible tools for heterogeneous documents and operational data.
• Develop evaluation frameworks with representative datasets, human annotations, automated assessments, and systematic failure analysis.
• Integrate model inference, retrieval systems, and external data services into reliable production applications and asynchronous workflows.
• Build and operate containerized workloads and event-driven AWS infrastructure with attention to concurrency, fault tolerance, observability, and maintainability.
• Collaborate with engineers and aviation domain experts to develop workflows that identify operational risks and produce traceable AI-generated analyses.

Requirements

• Strong software engineering fundamentals, including production code, architecture, testing, debugging, and operational reliability.
• Substantive applied AI experience beyond basic model API integrations, with an understanding of system architecture, tradeoffs, limitations, and observed behavior.
• Ability to model complex information domains, identify entities and relationships, and design appropriate software abstractions.
• Experimental discipline, independent technical judgment, and clear communication with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Experience or demonstrated depth in at least one area such as agentic systems, information retrieval, AI evaluation, knowledge representation, model adaptation, or inference optimization.
• Must be a U.S. Person and already authorized to work in the United States; visa sponsorship and visa transfers are not available.

Nice to have

• Experience with aviation, aerospace, safety-critical systems, computational linguistics, NLP, information science, or knowledge representation.
• Experience designing systems for technical documentation, regulations, or heterogeneous operational data.
• Experience developing distributed, event-driven, and containerized services.
• Experience with Python, LangGraph, BAML, AWS Bedrock, PostgreSQL/pgvector, or event-driven AWS infrastructure.
