Technical Program Manager (AI)

Location: San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY; hybrid attendance with staff expected in an office at least 25% of the time

Annual salary: $365,000–$435,000 USD

What you will do

• Bridge Anthropic researchers developing Claude’s scientific capabilities with the external scientific community.
• Help define external science strategy, including target fields, communities, programs, collaborations, and communications.
• Guide the Anthropic Science Blog by sourcing, drafting, and editing high-quality scientific stories.
• Design and run grants, research access programs, and partnerships with foundations, funders, universities, and scientific societies.
• Gather feedback on how researchers use Claude and translate capability gaps into recommendations for research and product teams.

Requirements

• PhD in a scientific or mathematical field with a record of original research.
• Strong scientific and general-interest writing skills, including the ability to explain how modern AI models are trained.
• Experience applying for or managing competitive grants; experience designing or administering funding programs is valuable.
• Deep engagement with frontier AI and an understanding of its capabilities, limitations, and impact on scientific work.
• Experience completing multi-stakeholder projects, coordinating contributors, and working through ambiguity.
• Credibility with researchers and a strong understanding of academic incentives, norms, and communities.

Nice to have

• Experience as a program officer, program director, or fellowship lead at a science funder, research agency, or philanthropy.
• Published science writing or a substantial public writing presence.
• Research experience using AI or ML methods, or building scientific software, tools, or datasets.
• Experience with scientific partnerships, conferences, workshops, AI safety, or responsible deployment.
