Payroll Specialist (AI)

Location: Remote within the United States

Base salary: $91,000–$115,000 annually for candidates in New York City and San Francisco; $68,500–$100,000 annually for other US-based team members. Annual bonus potential, equity participation, and benefits are also offered.

What you will do

• Process payroll for employees in the US and multiple other countries, including wages, variable pay, equity awards, deductions, garnishments, off-cycle runs, and multi-currency calculations.
• Maintain compliance with international, federal, and local tax and labor requirements, including quarterly and annual payroll tax filings.
• Administer leaves of absence and manage the related payroll, benefits, state, and statutory program requirements.
• Build AI-assisted and automated pre-payroll checks to identify anomalies in hours, deductions, currencies, and employee lifecycle data.
• Improve data flows between HRIS, payroll, benefits, and finance systems, while documenting payroll calendars, reconciliations, and operating procedures.
• Answer employee payroll questions and maintain global headcount costing for Finance and People planning.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience managing payroll for 500+ employees across multiple countries.
• Working knowledge of US and international payroll tax, labor law, and statutory reporting.
• Hands-on experience administering FMLA, state paid family and medical leave, parental leave, and international statutory leave.
• Experience with a global payroll or HRIS platform and strong Excel or Google Sheets skills, including lookups, pivots, and reconciliations.
• Regular experience using AI tools, with sound judgment regarding confidential payroll data and verification of AI-generated output.
• Ability to troubleshoot integrations across HR, payroll, benefits, and finance systems and explain payroll issues clearly.

Nice to have

• Experience with Rippling or Optum HSA/FSA administration.
• CPP, GPC, or equivalent payroll certification.
• Experience with tax withholding and reporting on equity compensation across countries.
• Experience in a fast-paced startup or an open-source, AI, or data science company.
