Principal Engineer - Full Stack Java (Fintech)

Location: London, United Kingdom — hybrid role with in-person collaboration as needed

What you will do

• Define the technical vision, architecture, and engineering strategy for the International Processing Engine and its integrations.
• Lead the design and evolution of Java back-end services, front-end components, RESTful APIs, distributed services, and enterprise integrations.
• Own complex decisions covering data design, resilience, scalability, security, observability, operational supportability, and technology risk.
• Lead delivery of strategic platform capabilities, production fixes, remediation initiatives, and complex cross-system changes.
• Establish engineering standards for architecture, coding, testing, documentation, security, releases, and operational excellence.
• Mentor technical leads and engineers while collaborating with product, delivery, QA, architecture, operations, and client stakeholders.

Requirements

• 12+ years of professional software development experience, including substantial hands-on experience with Core Java, Spring, and Spring Boot.
• Principal Engineer, Solution Architect, Lead Architect, or comparable senior technical leadership experience covering architecture, governance, and complex delivery.
• Strong SQL and relational database experience, including MS SQL Server and Sybase.
• Hands-on experience with Docker, Kubernetes, containerised application design, deployment, scalability, resilience, and operational support.
• Experience with full-stack engineering, RESTful APIs, distributed systems, enterprise integrations, automated testing, CI/CD, and deployment automation.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, or a related field, plus strong communication and stakeholder-management skills.

Nice to have

• Knowledge of securities trade lifecycle processes, including settlements, trade confirmations, reporting, books and records, collateral management, and clearance.
• JavaScript or Python experience.
• Experience with SAFe Agile, enterprise architecture, cloud-native engineering, or modernization strategies.
• Experience leading technical transformation and reliability or performance improvement initiatives in regulated client environments.
