Senior Engineering Manager (AI)

Location: Leicester, United Kingdom; hybrid work with three days per week in the Leicester city centre office and two days remote

What you will do

• Lead and grow multiple engineering teams and their managers while building a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning.
• Set long-term technical strategy with architecture and senior leadership, aligning engineering roadmaps with company goals.
• Own roadmaps for complex, distributed, high-traffic systems with strong resilience, observability, and performance.
• Raise AI maturity by introducing agentic loops, multi-agent workflows, AI development standards, and quality controls for AI-generated code.
• Manage AI tooling spend, cross-team dependencies, security, compliance, and data access for AI tools and models.
• Lead hiring, performance management, leadership development, and the growth of managers' AI fluency.

Requirements

• 8+ years of software engineering experience, including 4+ years in leadership and preferably managing managers.
• Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, or equivalent experience.
• Experience scaling engineering organisations and introducing new practices across multiple teams.
• Deep knowledge of large-scale system design, microservices, and cloud-native architecture.
• Recent hands-on experience building applications or tools with AI development tooling, including its cost, security, and quality trade-offs.
• Experience managing technical debt, reliability, feature delivery, budgets, headcount, resourcing, and AI tooling or token spend.

Nice to have

• Experience leading agentic workflows.
• eCommerce experience, especially with Shopify.
