Staff Software Engineer (Microservices Architecture)

Location: Hybrid; report to Austin, Texas or Warren, Michigan three times per week. The role is based in the United States.

What you will do

• Lead the architecture, design, and evolution of the Mobile Backend for Frontend platform and core microservices supporting mobile ownership experiences.
• Define technical strategy for scalable REST, GraphQL, WebSockets, and event-driven APIs, orchestration services, and integration patterns.
• Establish standards for reliability, resiliency, observability, security, SLOs, SLAs, and operational readiness.
• Drive CI/CD standards, release automation, progressive delivery, environment strategy, and production support practices.
• Apply AI-enabled tooling to code generation, anomaly detection, incident triage, capacity forecasting, and engineering productivity.
• Lead design and production-readiness reviews, modernization initiatives, technical mentoring, and cross-functional architecture alignment.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of software engineering experience with significant expertise in Java and Spring Boot microservices.
• Experience leading architecture and technical direction for distributed systems or platform-level backend services.
• Hands-on experience with scalable microservices, APIs, Azure cloud services, Kubernetes, and modern DevOps practices.
• Experience with CI/CD, observability, automated testing, TDD, code reviews, engineering governance, and SQL databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL.
• Must be able to work from the United States and report to Austin or Warren three times per week. GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship.

Nice to have

• Experience with Azure services including AKS, API Management, Functions, Cosmos DB, SQL Database, Azure Monitor, and Application Insights.
• Experience with GCP, Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, Loki, OpenTelemetry, distributed tracing, service mesh, or API gateways.
• Experience applying AI to software engineering, platform operations, incident management, or developer productivity.
• Experience with GraphQL, WebSockets, event-driven architecture, OAuth2, JWT, identity integration, and secure service-to-service communication.
• Experience developing microservices with NodeJS, TypeScript, JavaScript, or Go.
