Senior Postgres Engineer

Location: Remote, with the role associated with Fremont, California, United States; infrastructure is hosted on-premises.

Salary: $114,000–$180,000 USD gross base pay annually.

What you will do

• Assess and tune PostgreSQL configuration, queries, indexes, storage, hardware, operating systems, and operational practices.
• Design, operate, and improve high availability, streaming and logical replication, automated failover, and load balancing.
• Own backup, point-in-time recovery, disaster-recovery testing, patching, and major-version upgrades with minimal downtime.
• Recommend mature PostgreSQL extensions and plugins instead of building custom solutions.
• Automate provisioning, configuration, and routine maintenance while maintaining runbooks, documentation, security, and access controls.
• Lead root-cause analysis, review designs, answer technical questions, and mentor engineers.

Requirements

• 10+ years of hands-on experience operating and tuning PostgreSQL in production at scale.
• Experience running self-managed PostgreSQL on-premises, rather than only managed cloud services.
• Deep knowledge of MVCC, WAL, autovacuum, the query planner, locking, replication slots, partitioning, bloat management, and EXPLAIN ANALYZE.
• Production experience with high availability, streaming and logical replication, automated failover, connection pooling, load balancing, backup and recovery, and disaster-recovery testing.
• Experience with PostgreSQL extensions such as pg_stat_statements, pg_partman, and pg_repack, plus scripting, automation, monitoring, and alerting.
• Strong written and verbal communication and experience leading root-cause analysis.

Nice to have

• PostgreSQL committer or contributor status.
• Experience building PostgreSQL extensions in C or Rust.
• Experience operating multi-terabyte PostgreSQL deployments.
